On August 12-13, more than 100 members participated in the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians 2017 Members Assembly at Columbus Marriott Northwest in Dublin, OH.
The weekend began with an energizing workshop presented by Founder and CEO of The Happy MD Dike Drummond, MD. Attendees learned how to lower stress, achieve balance, and build a more ideal practice.
Next, attendees had the opportunity to write notes of appreciation to mentors, colleagues, or someone who has positively influenced their lives. This session was based on studies showing that those who demonstrate gratitude on a regular basis have improved physical and psychological health, enhanced empathy, and lower aggression. This time proved to be meaningful for those in attendance and the theme of gratitude continued throughout the weekend.
It can be difficult to stay positive and inspired day after day. Member panelists shared tips for keeping positive in our complex health care world. Stories of how they stay emotionally and physically well at various stages of their career were an inspiration for those in the audience.
During this year’s annual luncheon, attendees heard remarks from American Academy of Family Physicians Board Director Lynne Lillie, MD, and OAFP Speaker Mike Sevilla, MD. The OAFP Nominating Committee presented its slate of candidates and the Assembly elected new Academy officers. Additionally, members were able to discuss Academy priorities and emerging trends with OAFP and AAFP leadership representatives.

During this afternoon session, physicians were able to redeem their “loot” for wellness-themed prizes, a turn at playing the life-size Operation board game, and more!
Ohio’s medical marijuana program was the topic of discussion for an afternoon session. Panelists presented research and program rules. The speakers represented the Ohio Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee, the State Medical Board of Ohio, and the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Those in attendance were able to ask questions of the panelists and gain knowledge of what this program will mean for them as physicians and for their patients.
During the policy and bylaws session, resolution and policy process changes were discussed and approved, the bylaws were revised, and final action was taken on two resolutions.
