To meet the OAFP Foundation’s mission of cultivating student career choice in the specialty of family medicine, the Foundation provides scholarships to a resident delegate and alternate delegate and a student delegate and alternate delegate to attend the American Academy of Family Physicians’ National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students (National Conference). New this year, the Foundation created National Conference Student Scholars in an effort to increase Ohio’s medical students’ representation at the conference. The Foundation also hosted an Ohio-Only Reception during the conference in Kansas City, MO.
This year’s National Conference experience was a huge success! The Foundation supported 14 students and two residents to attend as part of the nearly 5,200 family medicine residents and students who embraced the theme, “Explore More.”
Attendees engaged in sessions encouraging them to get actively involved in changing the healthcare landscape in America. Among the numerous sessions, workshops, and visits in the expo hall, were the Congresses of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. This year’s Ohio delegation was as follows:
Resident Delegate: Kelly Thibert, DO, MPH
Grant Family Medicine Residency
Resident Alternate Delegate: Elizabeth McIntosh, MD, MPH
Grant Family Medicine Residency
Student Delegate: AuBree LaForce
Northeast Ohio Medical University
Student Alternate Delegate: Mollie Myers
University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences
Each delegate participated passionately in the congress sessions through writing and giving testimony to resolutions, serving on reference committees and voting on resolutions and national leadership positions.
The Academy and Foundation would also like to extend a congratulations to the Northeastern Ohio Medical University’s Family Medicine Interest Group for earning the Categorical 2019 Program of Excellence Award: Excellence in Promoting the Scope of Family Medicine.
Congratulations also goes out to Dr. Thibert for being elected resident member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors and to Dr. McIntosh for being elected resident chair of the 2020 National Conference!
