On September 25, Ohio Academy of Family Physicians member Ted Wymyslo, MD, FAAFP, received the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) 2019 Robert Graham Family Physician Executive Award during the AAFP Congress of Delegates in Philadelphia. Dr. Wymyslo is the senior medical advisor for the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers (OACHC).
This award recognizes Dr. Wymyslo’s service, dedication, leadership, and innovative spirit in the pursuit of high-quality primary health care and recognizes his efforts to successfully champion numerous collaborative approaches to improving population health and medical education.
Specifically recognized are Dr. Wymyslo’s efforts as the director of the Ohio Department of Health to get legislation passed in Ohio to assist physicians to transition to the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model of care and train medical students and residents in the PCMH model. This legislation enhanced the delivery of primary care and directly improved the health care and lives of many Ohioans.
The award also recognizes Dr. Wymyslo’s role in tackling one of the great health crises in a generation by leading the development of statewide opioid prescribing guidelines.
The AAFP’s announcement of the award states: “You are known for your dedication to medical education, improving health care access for underserved populations, and representing the best qualities of family medicine. This can never be more apparent than with your work in a program bringing health care to the homeless. You are truly a difference maker in your community, your great state of Ohio, and in the specialty of family medicine.”
Congratulations, Dr. Wymyslo!
Congratulations to Ted Wymyslo on this well-deserved honor. I knew him when we were in the Mount Carmel (Columbus, OH) Family Practice residency together. He has been a leader and a credit to our profession for many years.
The award could not have been given to a more deserving recipient than Ted Wymslo who embodies the ideals of what it means to be a Family Physician.
Way to go Ted!
