The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) will again host Bite-Sized Learning sessions on Sunday evenings this year. Members can join the conversation by logging on to the OAFP’s Facebook page or YouTube channel to watch live.
Moderated by OAFP Past President Mike Sevilla, MD, FAAFP, the first session, set for Sunday, February 20, at 7 p.m., will feature Christen Johnson, MD, MPH, as she shares about her experience participating in the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Health Equity Fellowship Program.
The AAFP Health Equity Fellowship is a year-long program that provides fellows with knowledge and experience in translating the concepts of health equity into clinical practice. Fellows learn from leading experts in the fields of medical education, research, public health, and health care policy. With the support of mentors and AAFP staff, fellows complete a capstone project at the end of the fellowship to demonstrate their achievement of the program’s learning objectives.
During her family medicine residency, Dr. Johnson created a resident-led health equity leadership concentration at her program that led to statistically significant increase in physician self-efficacy regarding caring for vulnerable populations.
Through her fellowship, Dr. Johnson took the work she had done in residency and amplified it to develop a curriculum that could reach a broader audience. The curriculum she developed during the yearlong process covers issues such as advocacy, social determinants of health, and cultural humility from a critical race theory lens. It covers the basics of oppression and the social determinants before displaying the connectedness of the two and finally gives resources for allyship and overcoming these challenges in daily practice. It also has a strong critical reflection component to assist learners with working through the emotional reactions to change and learning about racism, in attempt to better prepare learners for the work necessary to challenge their own personal biases and beliefs. The curriculum can be customized based on time available and is intended for medical students, residents, and active physicians.
Join us on Sunday, February 20, at 7 p.m. to hear more from Dr. Johnson on this valuable curriculum and health equity experience!
