The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) partnered with a consulting firm in 2021 to assess the Academy’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and identify new DEI opportunities. This work identified opportunities to integrate DEI throughout the Academy’s key strategic priorities and operations.
To help inform its DEI work moving forward and to expand leadership opportunities for family physicians, the AAFP Board of Directors recently approved the formation of the Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in Family Medicine (DEI-FM).
This commission will apply diversity, equity, inclusiveness, and antiracism lenses to inform and guide the Academy’s recommendations, policies, and work addressing disparities in care, health, and workforce, and the commission will be led by its current board chair, Ada D. Stewart, MD, FAAFP. The commission will kick off in June with a meeting in Kansas City, MO. The initial commission will have 10 members and will grow to a total of 22 members by 2024.
Members who are interested in serving on this commission should submit their online application by Friday, February 25. In addition, if an Ohio Academy of Family Physicians resident or student member is interested in applying, please contact Kaitlin McGuffie as Ohio can nominate a resident and student member for consideration.
