The American Academy of Family Physicians recently sent a letter to all 435 representatives asking them to sign on as a cosponsor to the Primary Care Patient Protection Act (HR 5858). If enacted, the bill would allow individuals enrolled in high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) to receive access to their primary care physician without cost-sharing and independent of the health plan’s deductible.
In 2017, almost 22 million Americans were enrolled in HDHPs. While the AAFP is supportive of HDHPs, they discourage appropriate use of primary care services given the high deductibles associated with these types of health plans. HR 5858 would eliminate these cost barriers and increase access to primary care services. Speak Out now!
