On October 16, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) hosted a virtual American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) endorsed Family Medicine Certification Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) group study on care of hospitalized patients in partnership with American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) state chapters of Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, and Wisconsin.
With over 80 physician learners in attendance, this cutting-edge, virtual program brought the issues of care of hospitalized patients to physicians with guidance from expert speaker Anna Squibb, MD. Dr. Squibb is a board certified family physician in Fairborn, OH. She earned her medical degree from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, completed her family medicine residency at Grant Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in addiction medicine through the American Board of Addiction Medicine, Clinical Pathway. Dr. Squibb practices at Wright State Physicians Health Center and currently serves as assistant professor of family medicine at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.
Family physician and OAFP member Melissa Jefferis, MD, FAAFP, who has served as OAFP’s virtual KSA moderator since 2011, moderated this virtual KSA. Drs. Squibb and Jefferis shared tips and insights on the care of older adults and the ABFM KSA format along the way and provided feedback to attendees throughout the assessment.
Attendees had the following to say about this KSA experience:
“I appreciate being able to have a virtual option for KSA completion.”
“This was a very well organized and informative virtual KSA.”
“Well done. I would sign up again.”
“Great experience and convenient for a working mom.”
Thank you to all that participated! For physicians interested in attending a future KSA, the OAFP is planning to host an in-person KSA at the 2023 Family Medicine Workshop in Westerville, OH, in January 2023. Registration will open in mid-November.

EasyPI – A New Resource From OAFP
The OAFP created Easy Performance Improvement (EasyPI), a peer-reviewed, curated collection of online educational resources, to support family physicians in completing a self-guided PI project in practice and receive credit for the work they do. EasyPI will guide you through the process of evaluating background information for a specific condition, determining how this information should drive patient care, and implementing team-based practice change to improve patient outcomes.
After implementing your chosen PI initiative, EasyPI resources provide step-by-step instructions on how to submit your work to the ABFM through its Self-Directed PI Project: Clinical Pathway application. Self-Directed PI projects fulfill an ABFM PI requirement, add 20 ABFM points to your portfolio, and equate to 20 continuing medical education credits through the AAFP.
