The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter (LFA, GOC), in partnership with RAMA Consulting Inc., has been awarded funding from the Ohio Department of Health to develop and promote a statewide lupus education initiative to increase the knowledge base and skills of physicians and other health care and support professionals. This enables them to effectively identify, diagnose, treat, and manage patients with newly diagnosed lupus, suspected lupus, or established lupus. MetroHealth in Cleveland coordinated the continuing medical education (CME)/continuing education units (CEU) accreditation for this important initiative (1.5 American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award Category 1 Credits).
- The complexity of lupus makes it extremely difficult to diagnose and treat because symptoms are individualistic and mimic other diseases
- Lupus subject-matter experts are needed to promote lupus education curriculums to primary care physicians, emergency room doctors, social workers, nurses (RNs and LPNs), mental health professionals, and community health workers
- There is a lack of awareness in communities regarding lupus
- Existing data systems need to be coordinated to develop a better epidemiological profile of lupus.
