Because COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting minority groups in Ohio and across the country, Governor Mike DeWine announced on April 20, that he has formed a new Minority Health Strike Force. The Minority Health Strike Force is led by Ohio Department of Aging Director Ursel McElroy and Director of the Governor’s Recovery Ohio Initiative, Alisha Nelson.

Today, Gov DeWine talked at length about disparities in health for minorities, citing numerous statistics, including pre-coronavirus and those related to the current pandemic. Then Mr. Smitherman spoke and when asked what the state could do to help, the expected and given answer was money. Nowhere in any of this conversation were other racial disparities regarding health mentioned such as out-of-wedlock births, single-parenting, schools dropouts, domestic abuse, crime and respect for authority and the rule of law. Is money the answer to those disparities? Why can’t the Governor, other state officials and minority leaders be honest and recite the entire list of statistics and “data”, not just the ones that avoid the underlying reason for many of the disparities in health outcomes?
