The U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass another immigration bill during the last week of June. The American Academy of Family Physicians issued a statement calling for the policy of separating children from families crossing the border to be halted.
Following the executive order issued by the President, the AAFP issued a second statement about the need to reunite families. The AAFP’s focus is on the mental, physical, and emotional toll of this policy.
On another immigration issue, the AAFP signed a joint letter expressing concerns with delays in the H-1B visa program affecting foreign-born medical residents. As a result, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Academic Engagement is working with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to resolve each case of a medical resident applying for an H-1B visa.
This should allow residents to start programs on time.
