Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) President Teresa Zryd, MD, MSPH, FAAFP, on behalf of the chapter, has authored a letter in support of the appointment of Roma Amin, MD, to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Commission on Health of the Public and Science.
Dr. Amin is a full time faculty member at Grant (OhioHealth) Family Medicine Residency Program in Columbus, OH. She practices inpatient, non-operative obstetric and ambulatory care, including gender affirming care and addiction medicine. In addition, she is in charge of the residency’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work; recruitment efforts; population health curriculum; and student clerkships.
Nationally, Dr. Amin has demonstrated her leadership skills, serving as a Member Constituencies Delegate to the 2021 AAFP Congress of Delegates. As an alternate delegate to the 2020 Congress, she served as a member of the Bylaws Reference Committee. Her expertise and ability to bring people to consensus is evidenced by her successful service in the role of National Conference of Constituency Leaders Minority Constituency co-convener.
In her letter of support, Dr. Zryd stated, “Roma has contributed much to OAFP’s work in the health equity, population health, and social determinants space as she is an active member of our Social Determinants of Health Workgroup, our Policing/Law Enforcement Violence Workgroup, and our Members Constituencies Workgroup. In addition, she is a member of the OAFP Board of Directors and the OAFP Foundation Board of Trustees. She is skilled at bringing a wandering discussion back into focus with a brief comment or question.”
Dr. Zryd’s letter continues, “Roma’s guiding values as a family physician are centered on health equity and justice for all. Often the only attending/person of color in the spaces in which she works, she thrives on navigating/leading challenging conversations with groups of people of different backgrounds and viewpoints. She understands the importance of listening to understand. She is an articulate, hard worker who would be fully committed to the work of the commission.”
Good luck, Dr. Amin!
