A warming climate is allowing ticks to move further north and giving the arachnids more time each year to feast on animals and humans, with veterinarians and public health officials noticing more cases of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses in states such as Michigan and Ohio.
The Ohio Department of Health reported that cases of Lyme disease in people increased from 404 in 2020 to 542 in 2021, while veterinarian Chase Marr of Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital in Traverse City, MI, said he and his colleagues have seen “a major increase” in canine infections with tick-borne diseases.
