On June 11, Governor Mike DeWine announced that Amy Acton, MD, MPH, will step down as director of the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and begin serving as his chief health advisor. The change was effective immediately. Lance Himes, who previously served as ODH director, was named interim-director.
“Let me say how very grateful I am for Dr. Acton’s selfless and tireless service to the people of Ohio as our ODH director,” said Gov. DeWine. “It’s true that not all heroes wear capes. Some of them wear a white coat embossed with the name Dr. Amy Acton.”
In her new role, Dr. Acton will take a comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing health and well-being for all Ohioans. In addition to advising on health issues, she will continue to focus on the COVID-19 crisis.
Dr. Acton did an excellent job in guiding the ODH and the State of Ohio through the COVID-19 pandemic. This is reflected in Ohio successfully “flattening the curve” and a continual lowering of deaths due to COVID-19. Her actions have likely saved thousands from COVID-19 infection and saved hundreds of deaths due to it. It is unfortunate that criticism both within and without the legislature has taken its toll resulting in her resignation from this position. She truly exemplifies humanity at its best and we should we wish her well.
