Over 200 physicians, residents, medical students, and family medicine supporters attended the virtual Building Cultural Intelligence to Breakdown Racism program on September 30.
Produced in partnership with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and a professional diversity speaker, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) created this interactive virtual program to provide physicians and other health care professionals with an opportunity to not only address racism as a public health crisis, but also systematically train participants to improve their cultural intelligence.

Professional diversity speaker Robin Shabazz, Esq., of The Eastledge Group of Cincinnati, OH, held the role of lead facilitator and provided participants an opportunity to have conversations about racism by reflecting on gaps in awareness of cultures, traditions, and ethnicities, and then take powerful steps toward personal improvement.
Attendees heard from AAFP President Gary LeRoy, MD, FAAFP, and Director of the AAFP Center for Diversity and Health Equity Danielle Jones, MPH, as they discussed the AAFP’s stance on racism as a public health crisis and the ways the AAFP and Center for Diversity and Health Equity have been working to combat this major issue for so many patients across the United States.
Ryan Kauffman, MD, FAAFP, provided invaluable information to attendees interested in the American Board of Family Medicine’s Health Equity Performance Improvement program, outlining the requirements to participate and submit projects, and sharing ways to incorporate the day’s learning points into the PI program.
After being provided with a wealth of information, attendees are ready to take next steps in their own paths. As Dr. LeRoy shared, “our spirits and bodies cannot rest easy in a land where injustice is given justification.”
