For the New Year, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians is kicking off the first issue of The Ohio Family Physician (TOFP) magazine with a focus on “Behavioral Health.” According to the American Psychiatric Association, behavioral health (also referred to as mental health) is defined as a health condition involving changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior (or a combination of these).
Let’s point out the statistics, nearly one in five (19%) of U.S. adults experience some form of mental illness; one in 24 (4.1%) has a serious mental illness; and one in 12 (8.5%) has a diagnosable substance use disorder.
With record breaking numbers of gun violence, suicide, and opioid-related deaths taking place across the nation, the OAFP believes it’s important to address these “swept under the rug and pretend it’s not there” issues. If your practice, experience, or background has a special focus on treating or helping patients with behavioral health issues, we need your voice today!
