The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) Bylaws Committee will be presenting the following bylaws change during the 2023 Virtual Annual Membership Meeting. (Proposed language to be deleted is indicated by strikeout.)
CHAPTER VIII – Dues and Assessments
Section 1. The amount of the annual dues for members of the OAFP may be established or changed by a
two-thirds (2/3) vote of the OAFP Board of Directors with the approval of the majority of the annual meeting.
(Background: Per the request of the Board of Directors to examine the process in which the membership deliberates and votes on dues increases, the Bylaws Committee proposes that the OAFP seeks to streamline the process in which member dues are considered and approved by removing the final approval from the membership at the annual membership meeting.
- In 2022, the OAFP Board of Directors agreed that to provide financial relief to OAFP’s membership, the Academy should forego raising membership dues until certain financial benchmarks are met. The OAFP will NOT raise member dues until OAFP’s short-term assets do not meet the funding reserve for the OAFP‘s annual operating needs and the OAFP’s long-term reserves fall below the current year’s operating balance.
- Due to the timing lag between the OAFP’s Annual Membership Meeting and the deadline to report chapter dues fees to the American Academy of Family Physicians for annual collections, there can be up to a two-year delay between approval and realization of a member dues increase. Our current process does not allow for enough time to respond if financial demands should require swift action.
