The American Academy of Family Physicians is working to help combat the dual epidemic of pain and the abuse and misuse of opioids. Through the Healthy Interventions framework, a pain management and opioid abuse toolkit with resources to help members, regardless of size or practice setting, is now available.
In addition, the AAFP is working with the American Medical Association (AMA) through its Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse. Through the Task Force, a physician education handout, naloxone education, was developed. This co-branded handout offers information for physicians to better educate themselves on the use of naloxone, nationwide naloxone access, and good samaritan laws.
A resource to educate physicians on the stigma associated with substance use disorder was has also been developed. The resource includes steps to take to decrease the stigma associated with substance use disorder.
