With Thanksgiving just a few days away, we’re spending time this week reflecting on all that we are thankful for here at the OAFP Foundation (Foundation). Whether with monetary donations, in-kind gifts, or time spent precepting a medical student, you made a difference. You gave, you mentored, you shared, and you represented the best of family medicine in 2021!
You gave. Through continued tough times, you supported the Foundation in whatever way you could; buying quilt tickets, purchasing merchandise, sending direct donations, and more.
You mentored and you shared. The Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program had a record-breaking 71 student participants this year. Family physicians from around the state shared their time and expertise with the next generation of the specialty. Not only did these students complete their summer with an appreciation for the complexities of a career in family medicine, these mentors had the opportunity to renew their joy in medicine by witnessing the every day necessities of practice through fresh eyes. According to student evaluations, when asked their interest in family medicine before their rotation, the average response from 0-10 was a 6. The average response after the rotations was an 8!
You ARE the best. Without our donors, corporate partners, regional chapters, partners, and friends, the Foundation’s mission to cultivate student career choice in the specialty of family medicine, simply put, would not be possible.
Let’s continue this year’s success into 2022. If you were a 2021 donor, we hope you continue your contribution. If you were a 2021 preceptor, please consider sharing your time again in 2022. If you’re new to Foundation activities, we hope you will consider joining us in whatever way rings true to you and your family medicine passion!
