The OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program will be participating in an innovative pilot program: Family Medicine – Advancing Innovation in Residency Education (FM-AIRE).
This pilot, sponsored by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), aims to explore the potential benefits and structure of a fourth year of training in family medicine. Participation gives programs expanded autonomy to create innovative training pathways and can offer relief from some ACGME program requirements. Participating programs can choose to convert all of their residency slots to 4 years in length or offer additional training for select residents only (maintaining both 3-year and 4-year training pathways). Riverside Family Medicine is the first family medicine program in the state of Ohio selected to participate in this initiative and is among the first nine participating programs of the more than 750 family medicine residency programs across the country.
By participating in the FM-AIRE initiative, Riverside Family Medicine will have the opportunity to pioneer new approaches to residency training and best meet the evolving healthcare needs of its communities while shaping the future of family medicine residency training. For Riverside Family Medicine’s pilot, it now offers a 3-year longitudinal (PGY2-PGY4) area of concentration focused on leadership and academic preparation for up to two residents per resident class.
