Applications are now open for the 2023 Rural Health Scholars Retreat set for Friday-Sunday, October 20-22, at Deer Creek State Park in Mt. Sterling, OH. The theme for this year’s retreat is Authenticity in Practice: the Mess and the Magic. Apply to attend today!
- Engage with a variety of physicians, both new and experienced, who are passionate about working in a rural place
- Connect with other students with an interest in preparing for generalist rural practice
- Consider what authenticity in practice means to them personally and professionally
- Develop an understanding of the opportunities and obstacles in rural residency training
- Begin to define their values and elucidate how these values can be lived out (or stepped on) during their career
- Define the term “moral injury” and describe situations that create this conflict.
The purpose of the Rural Health Scholars Program is to foster interest among medical students in a career in rural practice and to prepare them for a leadership role in restoring health to the rural communities in which they will someday live. Any student with an interest in rural generalist practice – whether family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry, surgery, public health, or research – is strongly encouraged to apply. Students from any level of medical school training at any of Ohio’s allopathic or osteopathic medical schools are welcome.
Below are a few quotes from students who attended last year’s retreat:
“I was unfamiliar with rural practice previous to this weekend and not only learned so much about this practice but was personally renewed by the lovely setting and wonderful group of people.”
“Really enjoyed meeting other invested students and hearing from mentors at all levels of practice /experience.”
“Every session was something to look forward to. I so enjoyed hearing everyone’s perspectives and having these important conversations. I feel empowered to keep this work up!”
“It opened my eyes to the importance of mentorship and what to seek in a mentor. Additionally, it connected me to other students and physicians with the same interest and reignited my passion for medicine and connecting with my future patients. Our discussions with the various physicians resurfaced the sense of humanity that has always pulled me towards the practice of medicine.
The deadline to apply is Sunday, September 17. For more information or clarification, please review the retreat information and full agenda or contact Dawn Mollica.
