On December 12, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) hosted a virtual American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) endorsed Family Medicine Certification Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) group study on diabetes in partnership with American Academy of Family Physicians state chapters Maryland, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
With over 100 physician learners in attendance, this cutting-edge, virtual program brought the issues of diabetes to physicians with guidance from expert speaker Elena Christofides, MD, FACE. Dr. Christofides practices endocrinology in Columbus, OH, at Endocrinology Associates. Dual board certified in endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism, and internal medicine, she also runs an independent research facility, Endocrinology Research Associates. Dr. Christofides consults with multiple companies on Bio-Tech innovations in the endocrine and metabolic space.
Family physician and OAFP member Melissa Jefferis, MD, FAAFP, who has served as the OAFP virtual KSA moderator since 2011, moderated this virtual KSA. Drs. Christofides and Jefferis shared tips and insights on diabetes and the ABFM KSA format along the way and provided feedback to attendees throughout the assessment.
Attendees had the following to say about the KSA experience:
“I really appreciate this format and time. It is very nice to be able to do this at home without all the worries about going somewhere at an inconvenient time with added expense. Particularly with COVID being in the picture now, this socially distanced method is wonderful.”
“I enjoy utilizing virtual KSA’s for CME. It is convenient for me. This topic is important in my practice. Dr. Christofides is a fabulous choice as the expert. She is so very knowledgeable, well-organized, and personable.”
“[Dr. Chistofides is] very knowledgeable and able to make practical how providers of diabetic care should be thinking, from the aspect of patient care all the way to the medical literature and board queries.”
Thank you to all that participated! For physicians interested in attending a future virtual KSA, the OAFP is planning to host two sessions in the fall of 2022, topics and dates will be announced at a later date.
