Thank God, I’m a family physician! This phrase is frequently repeated today amongst family physicians. But, it was introduced by Tom Todd, MD, the 38th president of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. While family medicine and health care seem to have changed over the years, one thing remains constant—family physicians thank God that they are family physicians.
In the winter 2016 issue, we take a look at the past, present, and future of family medicine. We present to you the history of family medicine and the OAFP through stories shared by Tennyson Williams, MD, the 34th president of the OAFP. And, we put the family in family medicine by sharing multi-generational stories of families in family medicine with the stories of the McLoney, Davidson and Abromowitz, Diller, Jose, and Kauffman families. Editor Ed Bope, MD, also shares his family story on family medicine in his Editor’s Message.
Looking toward the future, we must address physician burnout. President Ryan Kauffman, MD, tells his personal story of fighting burnout. And, Ed Wymyslo, MD, explains his journey from burnout to joy through the patient-centered medical home.
There are also upcoming events and opportunities rapidly approaching that we hope you join us for—the 2017 Family Medicine Workshop and our event of the year, the 2017 Quality Improvement Summit amongst many others.
