The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians would like to congratulate medical students on a successful Match Day held on March 20. Although celebrations were different than years past, we hope that everyone was able to find a way to share the excitement with their friends and family!
We heard from Michelle Disher, graduating senior at Case Western Reserve University, about her Match Day experience:
Where did you match?
I match to North Colorado Family Medicine in Greeley, CO.
How did you feel about Match Day 2020?
I felt ecstatic about where I matched. It was not the Match day I had imagined, but I still celebrated it with family and friends through webcams and social media posts. It was just as special!
Who shared your day with you?
My mom and my partner were home with me, and I had several friends and other family members watch me open my digital “envelope” on Google Hangouts.
When did your interest in family medicine begin?
My interest in family medicine began with my interests in primary care and public health during my undergraduate studies as an international studies major.
What are you looking forward to in a career in family medicine?
Having continuity of care with patients and getting to develop a trusting relationship with them over time. I am also looking forward to having a leadership role in advocating for the health of my community.
What got you involved in the OAFP?
I wanted to be part of a larger community of students and physicians who are working in primary care. It’s been inspiring to hear about how they are serving their patients and all of their accomplishments. The Academy has also been a great resource of opportunities to get involved in. Being a member has reassured me that family medicine is the right path for me and helped empower me to create my own path in medicine.
Family medicine student matches broke records this year for both the number of positions offered and the number of positions filled. What an exciting time in family medicine! This was the first year for an entirely unified match for allopathic and osteopathic medical students.
- 40,084 applicants submitted program choices, with 37,256 total positions offered
- Family medicine offered 4,685 positions, 557 more than 2019 and 13.7% of positions offered overall
- 4,335 medical students and graduates matched to family medicine residency programs in the NRMP Match; an increase of 487 from 2019

To all of the soon-to-be residents joining our family medicine family, the OAFP thanks you for your membership and wishes you the best of luck in residency—you’re on your way to amazing things and we’re so excited for you!
Along your way, don’t forget about the Academy. We encourage you to keep your membership through residency with AAFP and the OAFP (or other state chapter where you will be completing your residency).
