On January 31, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Training the Next Generation of Primary Care Doctors Act (S.304), legislation that will update the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program for five years, authorize funding for existing residency programs, and support expansion into rural and underserved communities.
Senators Jon Tester (D-MT), Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV), Doug Jones (D-AL), John Boozman (R-AR), Joseph Manchin (D-WV), and Kamala Harris (D-CA) are original cosponsors. The THCGME program is vital to addressing the shortage of primary care physicians and the geographic maldistribution of physicians.
