Physician Wellness Overload? Yes, it’s a real thing – too many resources, too many research studies, and too many well-intended organizations, each trying to comfort an ailing profession. There are so many tools for self-care and templates for tackling administrative burdens available to physicians these days that it’s easy for information seekers to be easily overwhelmed and overloaded.
During the next Wellness Wednesdays session, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians will tackle the tough issue about where to first find competent wellness resources and then how to turn that knowledge into a powerful individualized plan for overall well-being. Come “Explore Tools and Resources for Overcoming Burnout” on Wednesday, June 20, from 12:15 – 1 p.m. EST. The program is complimentary and registration is open for physicians and their care teams, family medicine residents and medical students to participate.
American Academy of Family Physicians Senior Vice President of Education Clif Knight, MD, FAAFP, will serve as this session’s featured presenter. According to Dr. Knight, “Individual physicians do have a responsibility to have healthy behaviors and habits, but in the physician culture, it starts in medical school and pervades through into practice—this culture of self-sacrifice on behalf of the patients is emphasized more than self-care. It’s noble and really laudable—it’s a virtue—but if you don’t balance it with self-care, it’s unsustainable.”
- Know resources available through the AAFP and other sources useful to improve physician well-being and professional satisfaction
- Utilize the family physician ecosystem framework when developing a plan to improve your personal well-being
- Be stimulated to develop a personal plan to improve your well-being.
“Improving rates of family physician burnout requires addressing multiple issues. There are many good resources available to assist family physicians, and we will discuss several of them,” said Knight.
