Last month, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) launched a new and improved Physician Portfolio! Designed with physician input, MyABFM Portfolio is a clean, purpose-driven redesign of the individual portfolio that family physicians use for certification. To help find information quickly, a new, personalized, one-page dashboard will provide a snapshot of their certification status, remaining requirements, and quick access to their profile information, continuing medical education (CME), licensure, exams, fees, and more. Designed with abundant input from Diplomates at each step of the revision process, the new portfolio was truly designed by physicians for physicians – including one of Ohio’s own!
Ryan Kauffman, MD, participated in the focus group that helped design and troubleshoot the new portfolio. Dr. Kauffman shares more about the process and results in a rapid Q&A below:
What is your overall impression of the new portfolio?
I like the way that the new portfolio makes it easy to see on one page what you need to do and helps you find a way to get the credit you need that fits with your interests and your practice. It’s very customizable.
What’s the best new feature?
The best new feature is the improved search functionality. All of the options have always felt pretty overwhelming, but the improved search makes it much easier to find the best activities for me.
Why should a Diplomate check out the new portfolio?
You should check out the portfolio now, because you are likely to find options for credit that you don’t know about because they were so hard to find on the old website. There are also a lot of new options that make it even easier to get credit for work that you are already doing!
Was there anything specific that you helped to change during the trial process?
It was a lot of fun to be involved in the testing process. The ABFM was extremely receptive to suggestions. It was not unusual to send in a comment, then a few days later see an update to the portfolio that incorporated the idea. I am proud to be a Diplomate of a board that is so receptive to feedback from physicians and focused on minimizing the frustration and wasted time required for board certification.

Over the past two months, the OAFP has hosted a few webinars to provide valuable information and updates regarding ABFM Family Medicine Certification. If you weren’t able to join live or would like to review them again, both recoded sessions are now available. Please note, the recoded sessions are not accredited for continuing medical education credits.
