The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the calendar year (CY) 2022 Medicare physician fee schedule (MPFS) and Quality Payment Program final rule. The rule included a number of notable wins for family medicine, including a planned update to clinical labor pricing, higher payments for vaccine administration and chronic care management services, and permanent coverage of tele-mental health services after the end of the public health emergency. Several changes were also made to the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). However, the final rule also confirmed that, without congressional action, Medicare payment cuts are set to go into effect on Saturday, January 1, 2022. The AAFP released a statement highlighting the positive policy changes and urging Congress to take action.
The AAFP also created a comprehensive summary of the final rule.
