We are so excited to launch a new platform for The Ohio Family Physician that provides an enhanced digital experience allowing readers to naturally swipe up and down for ease of reading articles as well as sharing them via social media and email. We hope you enjoy this new feature and ask you contact Communications Manager Morgan Pelt with feedback or questions.
In the summer issue, we focus on nutrition in family medicine, highlighting ways communities are “Eliminating Food Deserts through Community Health Care,” as well as encouraging family physicians to be more involved in nutrition education. An article written by David L. Weldy, MD, PhD, FAAFP, FACSM, “Good Nutrition Starts with Home Economics: Getting Back to the Basics,” describes the importance of incorporating home economics back into school curriculums.
Read how medical student and resident members are incorporating nutrition education into their training in “Improving Nutrition Education through Collaborative Cooking Classes,” by Kelsey Sicker, MD Candidate Class of 2019 at The Ohio State University; and in “Family Medicine Residency Program Pilots Pediatric Nutrition Curriculum” written by Anne Worth, DO, a family medicine resident at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
This year, we are also highlighting a historical milestone — the 70th anniversary of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians! “Leading, Advocating, and Advancing Family Medicine,” written by Executive Vice President Ann M. Spicer, will take you back in time to 1948 when the OAFP was first chartered. We hope you celebrate all year long by contributing your family medicine story to the “Cheers to 70 Years” page on our website, as well as attending the Family Medicine Celebration (FMC), the Academy’s annual meeting formerly known as the Members Assembly, set in a fresh, new location in Columbus, OH.
This year, we want to not only relive the past, but ignite the future of family medicine. The FMC will give members an opportunity to connect with old and new friends, combat physician burnout with speaker Dan Diamond, MD, learn more about the state’s medical marijuana program, earn continuing medical education credits, complete a pain management knowledge self-assessment/clinical self-assessment, and much more. It will be an event to remember, and a weekend you don’t want to miss!
