On June 18, Kettering Health Network’s Soin Family Medicine was awarded a $400,000/year grant renewable for 5 years from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support maternity care education in family medicine residency graduate medical education training.
Under the stated project goals, Soin Family Medicine Residency will increase the number of residents trained in family medicine obstetrics, with a focus on pregnancy-related emergencies and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) training, opioid use disorder (OUD) identification and treatment in pregnant individuals and infants, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and co-treatment of mental health, as well as proficiency in telehealth, continuity of care/value-based care, and nutrition and lifestyle education by 2026.
- The SAFE Pregnancyinitiative of the program will train family medicine residents for maternity care competency by optimizing evidence-based care, interdisciplinary care teams and the standardization of processes, including care during high risk-low frequency events;
- The MOMS+initiative will leverage family medicine residency education to optimize care of families with OUD and train residents for competent care; and
- The Empowering Familiesinitiative will train family medicine residents in the benefits of group-facilitated patient education to improve the health and wellness of individuals and families in Greene County, Ohio.

Congratulations! Hopefully they will share their findings and best practices they develop over the span of the grant to assist other residencies in improving birth experiences for patients across Ohio and the nation. Perhaps some future columns in the Ohio Family Physician would be appropriate to report out on results? With our high infant mortality rate and the disparity in outcomes experiences by different racial, cultural and ethnic groups, this is welcome news.
