Every family physician has a story.
For many of you, it began with a mentor, a physician who welcomed you into their practice, shared their passion for family medicine, and helped you see the difference you could make in patients’ lives.
For more than 35 years, the OAFP Foundation has been creating those life-changing moments through the Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program. Since 1990, more than 1,650 medical students have participated in the program, and the impact is clear: 33% choose family medicine, while 72% pursue careers in primary care.
As Ohio continues to face a growing shortage of primary care physicians, investing in the next generation has never been more important.
Each summer, the Foundation provides students with a $600 or $1,500 stipend to complete a meaningful preceptorship alongside a practicing family physician. These experiences often become the defining moment that influences a student’s career choice.
In fact, we’ve learned that a $5,000 investment will create one future family physician, a physician who will go on to care for thousands of patients over the course of a career.
- Inspire medical students to choose family medicine
- Strengthen Ohio’s physician workforce
- Improve access to primary care
- Build healthier communities for generations to come.
The future of family medicine depends on physicians who are willing to invest in those who follow them. We invite you to pay forward the mentorship that shaped your own career by making a gift to the OAFP Foundation.
Together, we can honor the legacy of those who inspired us while investing in the physicians who will inspire the next generation.
Make a Family Physician. Let’s celebrate together.
