According to the Robert Graham Center, Ohio will require an additional 681 primary care physicians by 2030. One strategy in supporting the next generation of family physicians is prioritizing mentorship and precepting. This piece of the puzzle is critical to ensuring a strong, confident, and empowered family medicine pathway.
To provide support and education to family physicians, no matter where they are on the precepting spectrum, the OAFP Foundation (Foundation) hosted a webinar about all things precepting. This session was recorded and is available for enduring continuing medical education (CME) credit through Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
This program highlights the unique role of community-based faculty in delivering medical educational programs. It reviews motivating factors and barriers that limit or promote involvement in clinical teaching and discusses the importance of feedback and incentives in motivating participation in the educational program. Additionally, resources are shared on how to improve teaching quality, along with strategies and tools available in the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Preceptor Expansion Initiative to motivate, mentor, monitor, and maintain community-based preceptor involvement in medical education.
- Detail how to access resources to enhance your teaching skills
- Connect with medical schools within the state to develop mutually beneficial teaching relationships
- Discuss how you can integrate students into clinical workflows
- Describe the ABFM’s Performance Improvement Precepting Program, and other available resources that benefit you, your patients and practice, and future family physicians.
With these resources and other tools (such as your clinical knowledge, breadth of expertise in patient care, dedication to continued learning, and advocacy for team-based care) you will be fully equipped to mentor, inspire, and motivate the next generation of the family medicine specialty. Plus, check out the Foundation’s Preceptor Resources webpage, under “Become a Preceptor,” for additional information.
If you have any questions about this program or are interested in serving as a summer preceptor for the Foundation’s Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program, please contact Kaitlin McGuffie.
