Mentors and preceptors are key to securing the next generation of family physicians. Medical students need positive family medicine preceptors early in their medical school career to engage with them in their journey and provide them with insight into the family medicine specialty they may not otherwise receive.
Following are a few opportunities available to physicians looking to serve as a preceptor for a medical student:
- OAFP Foundation’s (Foundation) Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program
This program has been the Foundation’s flagship program since 1990; serving over 1,300 medical students in its time. The program pairs medical students with a family physician for four weeks during the summer before medical school year two. The Foundation supports up to 70 students in the program; representing students from each of Ohio’s seven medical schools. Recruitment for this summer is currently underway. If you would like to participate in or have questions about this longstanding, successful program, please contact Kaitlin McGuffie or call 800.742.7327. You can also fill out the volunteer preceptor form, and return to Kaitlin.
- Third-Year Clerkship Preceptor at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine
Each third-year student at OSU is assigned to a family medicine office for a four-week clinical experience. Program coordinators are in need of clinical sites and physician preceptors for this rotation. The student is welcome to work with any physician in the office including ancillary staff (kept to about 1 day per week). This clinical experience emphasizes health promotion, the management of common acute medical problems, and chronic disease management. Students at this level are self-directed learners with the core medical skills to participate in your practice environment. In order to get the required amount of clinical hours, the student must be in the office for at least 7 half days per week. Each Tuesday afternoon the students attend didactic sessions and will not be available to be in the clinic. If interested in this opportunity, please contact Danielle Secrease at OSU.
- NEOMED PACE Program
PACE is a longitudinal, continuity of care experience during the M1 and M2 years that allows students to experience and participate in patient health care delivery as directed by you as their preceptor. Students are matched with you as a primary care preceptor and remain matched with you for both years. Placement coordination takes place over the summer. Preceptors are community-based, primary care specialists in general pediatrics, general internal medicine, family medicine, general obstetrics-gynecology, or geriatric medicine.
If you are interested in serving as a PACE preceptor, please contact Alyssa Pryor and provide the following information:
