The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy (SOBP) recently issued amended compounding rules for comment. The SOBP elected to rescind all existing rules and redraft new rules. Many aspects of the proposed rules mirror the provisions included in the existing rules. In fact, the hazardous compounding rule contains essentially the same provisions as the existing rule.
The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians has a small group of physicians who are reviewing these draft rules. The OAFP is also working closely with the Ohio State Medical Association and other physician organizations to submit joint comments on the compounding rules rewrite.
Generally speaking, while we are happy that the SOBP elected to provide a Terminal Distributor of Dangerous Drugs (TDDD) license exemption for some physicians and lessoned the requirements for non-sterile compounded drugs, many of the concerns expressed in previous letters to the SOBP continue to stand, such as the suggestion that there are several low-risk sterile compounding procedures that should not be held to the same standard as all sterile compounding procedures.
Comments are due to the SOBP no later than Thursday, February 1.
