On March 21, thousands of medical students across the United States experienced one of the biggest days in their journey to family medicine – finding out where they matched for residency! Of the 4,574 medical students who matched to family medicine residency programs across the United States, 179 of those students matched to Ohio residency programs.
- 179 residency slots filled, 2 more than 2024
- 203 residency slots were available, 6 less than 2024
- Match rate of 88.18%, up from 2024, 2023, and 2022.
Read the national breakdown of the family medicine match provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), in the 2025 Match® Results for Family Medicine. A full analysis of the 2025 Match will be available later this spring, along with outcomes from Ohio’s medical schools post-graduation. These numbers do not include the SOAP or military Match numbers. Almost all of family medicine’s open residency slots are typically filled by July.

“After attending The Ohio State University for medical school, I matched into family medicine at my top choice, The Ohio State University! I am thrilled to be staying in the place I call home. Go bucks!”

“Match day is a unique experience to medical students in the United States. From the work that we put in during our undergraduate careers, to the journey between undergraduate and medical school, through the four intense years of medical school itself, it all culminates to one moment on a Friday in March where we open an email that decides our futures. For me, my journey led me to programs that work with resource-limited and underrepresented populations with a focus on advocacy, diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was beyond ecstatic to open my email on that Friday in March to find I matched with my dream program at OhioHealth’s Grant Family Medicine Residency. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and how I can continue to grow as a person and as a physician with this amazing team.
I am currently in South America on a global health rotation in Argentina, so I have been celebrating match from here! This is a photo of me and my friend and classmate at OUHCOM, Shelby Cornelius, who matched to OhioHealth’s Doctors Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program and is also in Argentina on the global rotation with me.”

“I feel lucky to have had the support and mentorship of the amazing family medicine attendings and faculty at UC from day one of medical school and look forward to continuing residency at UC Health West Chester Family Medicine with the same great group of people.”
Sydney Flesher
School: Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
Residency Program: Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program | Pennsylvania
“I am ecstatic that I matched to my top program and even more excited to finally become the doctor I have dreamt of becoming. Reflecting back on my time in medical school, I think that the Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program I was involved in solidified my decision in family medicine. I got to see the possibilities of family medicine and how each physician can incorporate their passions into practice in order to best serve their community. I will always be grateful that the OAFP Foundation (Foundation) gave me an opportunity to explore family medicine.”

Medical school: Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)
Residency Program: Emory University Family Medicine Residency Program | Georgia
“It was an amazing journey to Match Day. There were plenty of challenges and long days and nights, but I have no regrets with the path I have chosen and am so grateful to have been matched at my top choice program! I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in the Foundation’s Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program, as that was the experience that solidified that family medicine is the specialty for me.”
Mia Wang, MPH
Medical School: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Residency Program: University of Maryland Family Medicine Residency Program | Maryland
“I am going to the University of Maryland! Couples matched with my partner!”
Support the Next Generation of Family Physicians
We need physicians like you to introduce medical students to family medicine and mentor them along their path to becoming physicians. Following are a few ways you can be a part of this important work:
Become A Student Preceptor
Mentors and preceptors are key to securing the next generation of family physicians. Medical students need positive family medicine preceptors early in their medical school career to engage with them in their journey and provide them with insight into the family medicine specialty they may not otherwise receive through standard medical school rotations.
Sign up to be a preceptor for the Foundation’s Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program, watch the Precepting: A Win, Win, Win archived webinar, and check out preceptor resource section on the Foundation’s website for ways to get involved and engage medical students pursuing family medicine careers.
Donate to the Foundation
The Foundation strives to ensure a thriving family physician workforce for Ohio through experience and leadership opportunities for medical students and residents. Foundation programming provides medical students with the experience to witness the true effects a family physician has on their community and re-ignites the passion for family medicine in residents that have already made a commitment to the specialty.
Your contribution, no matter how big or small, is needed and will go directly to supporting programs to achieve the Foundation’s mission like the Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program, student scholarships to AAFP’s FUTURE conference, and delegate scholarships for students and residents to represent their peers at their annual congresses. Make a donation today!
Support Student & Resident Attendance at the Family Medicine Celebration
In an effort to promote family medicine in Ohio to all future family physicians, the OAFP offers free Family Medicine Celebration registration to student and resident members through a member-driven sponsorship program. The 2025 Family Medicine Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 16, at The Exchange Events at Bridge Park in Dublin, OH.
The goal is to receive enough financial support for all Ohio medical student and resident members. The cost of each registration is $250; however, any amount given will support student and resident attendance at the annual Family Medicine Celebration. Support the fund today.
