State health officials won’t require facial coverings, but the Ohio Department of Health recommends unvaccinated students, teachers, and staff wear masks this fall.
“We strongly recommend vaccinations for staff and eligible students,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said on July 26. “We strongly recommend those who are un-vaccinated consistently wear masks.”
“Our mask recommendation is based in science, but it is not a mandate.”
The health department’s guidelines come after the American Academy of Pediatrics advocated that all students — regardless of their vaccination status — wear facial coverings when they return to their classrooms. No vaccine has been authorized for use in children under age 12 and one, from Pfizer/BioNTech, has been OK’d for ages 12 and up.
