Webster’s defines the word “pivot” as turning or rotating in a swiveling movement. Pivot seems to best describe the past year. As the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) moved from in-person to virtual events, practices also moved from in-person patient visits to telehealth. Our personal lives swiveled from normal to something entirely different. And while the pivot was challenging, family physicians didn’t miss a beat in caring for their patients and communities. In this annual report, we highlight our successes in this challenging time and salute our more than 5,200 family physician, family medicine resident, and medical student members for their perseverance and determination under difficult circumstances.
The OAFP encourages its members to review the past years’ continuing medical education offerings, strides in health equity awareness, digital and print membership publications, and member leadership positions on the state and national level. The OAFP is also proud of its member advocacy efforts and partnerships with other health care organizations
While pivot is the word of the year, with pivoting comes the opportunity to do things in new and better ways. People are anxious to meet again face-to-face, but others have come to understand the value of telehealth and virtual meetings. As the OAFP approaches a strategic planning year in a new “normal” world, we will attempt to balance the needs of all while incorporating the best changes the pandemic caused us to discover. Thank you for the care you provide to your patients and communities during this most unique and challenging time. We are grateful for your membership as your involvement in the OAFP allows us to continue to advance family medicine in Ohio and across the country.
