After being directed to work with stakeholders to resolve concerns, the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy (SOBP) has re-filed prescribing compounding rules with the Common Sense Initiative (CSI) without addressing many of the concerns outlined in a February 1 letter co-signed by seven medical associations including the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.
The OAFP submitted a letter on February 18 asking that the CSI to reject these re-filed rules so that yet-to-be stakeholder concerns can be addressed.
When the rules were originally filed, the CSI arranged a meeting between representatives of the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA), the Ohio Dermatological Association (ODA), and the SOBP. Rules were withdrawn so that the SOBP could work with stakeholders to resolve concerns with the rules as written. The pharmacy board met only once with OSMA and ODA representatives prior to re-filing the rules making only minor revisions.
OAFP President Stan Anderson, MD, in his letter to the CSI stated, “We stand by the concerns stated in the February 1 letter submitted in behalf of the members of seven physician organizations. The administrative burden and expense created for physician practices by this rules package are an overreach on the part of the SOBP and are detrimental to patient care in the state of Ohio.”
