The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians has nominated W. Fred Miser, MD, MA, to the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Education. A professor of family medicine at The Ohio State University (OSU), Columbus, OH, and director of the OSU Family Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Miser currently serves as the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) liaison to the AAFP Commission on Education.
In the letter of chapter support, OAFP President Ryan Kauffman, MD, states, “During the past 28 years, Dr. Miser has been involved in teaching medical students, family medicine residents, faculty and colleagues. He describes his passion as education and he explains that he strives to be the best family physician that he can be, to take the best safe care of his patients, and to teach.”
In 2013, Dr. Miser was awarded the AAFP Exemplary Teaching Award for full-time facility. He received the OAFP’s Family Medicine Educator of the Year Award in 2012, and has received his residency program’s best teacher award on multiple occasions. In addition, Dr. Miser, in 2014, was named to receive both the OSU College of Medicine “Courage to Teach” award and the OSU Distinguished Educator award.
Dr. Miser earned his medical degree at the OSU College of Medicine and completed family medicine residency at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Ft. Gordon, GA. He completed a two-year faculty development fellowship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, and later served as director of that fellowship program.
A member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the North American Primary Care Research Group, the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association, Dr. Miser is an at-large director on the OAFP Board of Directors.
