On November 20, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) hosted a virtual American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) endorsed Family Medicine Certification Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) group study on care of women in partnership with American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) state chapters of Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. With over 100 physician learners in attendance, this virtual program provided a review and self-assessment opportunity for physicians with guidance from expert speaker Bethany Panchal, MD, and moderator Melissa Jefferis, MD.
Dr. Panchal is the program director at The Ohio State University Family Medicine Residency. She specializes in women’s health, including obstetrical care and preventive health care, is certified as an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor, and is certified in electronic fetal monitoring. Dr. Panchal earned her medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and attended theRiverside Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency.
Family physician and OAFP member Melissa Jefferis, MD, FAAFP, has served as OAFP’s virtual KSA moderator since 2011. Drs. Panchal and Jefferis shared tips and insights on the care of women and the ABFM KSA format throughout the assessment.
Attendees had the following to say about this KSA experience:
“Dr. Panchal was clear and concise. It was a good learning experience.”
“I appreciated Dr. Panchal’s succinct responses to questions, and it was helpful to hear how she thought through a few questions I struggled with as well.”
“Great experience and learning.”
“This KSA was helpful and very worthwhile.”
Thank you to all that participated! For physicians interested in attending a future KSA, the OAFP is hosting an in-person KSA at the Family Medicine Workshop in Westerville, OH, in January 2023.

EasyPI – A New Resource from the OAFP
The OAFP created Easy Performance Improvement (EasyPI), a peer-reviewed, curated collection of online educational resources, to support family physicians in completing a self-guided PI project in practice and receive credit for the work they do. EasyPI will guide you through the process of evaluating background information for a specific condition, determining how this information should drive patient care, and implementing team-based practice change to improve patient outcomes.
After implementing your chosen PI initiative, EasyPI resources provide step-by-step instructions on how to submit your work to the ABFM through its Self-Directed PI Project: Clinical Pathway application. Self-Directed PI projects fulfill an ABFM PI requirement, add 20 ABFM points to your portfolio, and equate to 20 continuing medical education credits through the AAFP.
