The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation has awarded the OAFP Foundation a $1,250 student externship matching grant in support of the 2017 Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program (Preceptorship Program).
The externship program provides an important partnering opportunity between the AAFP Foundation and AAFP chapters and chapter foundations. The goal of the externship program is to stimulate interest among medical students to select a career and/or pursue research opportunities in family medicine.
The Foundation was also awarded funding from the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers (OACHC) through its Workforce Initiative grant from the state. With this partnership, the Foundation will be able to expand its summer program to offer 70 medical students, representing each of the seven medical schools in Ohio, an opportunity to precept with a family physician over the summer months. Thirty-five students will be placed in federally qualified health centers across the state to experience this type of practice setting, and an additional 35 students will be placed in a variety of other family medicine sites.
The Foundation appreciates the support of partners like the AAFP Foundation and the OACHC to continue providing medical students a first-hand look at the amazing work family physicians do, in turn encouraging the career choice of family medicine. Outcomes of the program prove powerful – 30% have chosen family medicine and 74% have chosen primary care since the program’s inception in 1990!
