Implicit bias is demonstrated as being pervasive among health care providers and having harmful effects on patient health. However, formal medical education and training curriculum is often void of content that provides a framework for identifying and mitigating implicit biases in clinical practice. The primary goal of this training is to promote awareness of implicit bias among the entire health care team and to provide resources for mitigating the negative effects of implicit bias on patient care.
The core components include an overview describing what implicit bias is and how it functions, specifically in the health care setting, and tools for self-assessment and strategies that can be used to alleviate biases within the clinic and or health care system. Training activities will include self-assessments, application of skills to case study examples, small group discussions, and the development of an implementation plan. The training will also include a component that addresses how participants can turn what they have learned into a quality improvement project to earn valuable American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) performance improvement (PI) credit for their family medicine certification.
- Increased knowledge about the science of implicit bias and how it effects patient health
- Increased self-awareness of existing implicit biases and a demonstration of commitment to incorporating mitigation strategies into practice
- Increased understanding of how to incorporate health-equity improvement strategies into practice that will qualify for ABFM PI credit.
