Over the course of 2017, the Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) has produced many publications and online resource pages covering a variety of topics. The following are highlighted as publications of interest:
Medicaid Basics
HPIO has created Medicaid Basics every two years since 2005. Each year it is released to coincide with the state biennial budget. This publication serves as a foundational summary of the state-federal program. The 2017 edition provides an overview of Ohio Medicaid eligibility, enrollment, and financing. The brief also reviews key Medicaid-related policy changes and an update on Medicaid expansion enrollment trends and spending.
2017 Health Value Dashboard
The Health Value Dashboard is a tool to track Ohio’s progress towards health value – a composite measure of Ohio’s performance on population health outcomes and health care spending. The Dashboard examines Ohio’s performance relative to other states, tracks change over time, and examines Ohio’s greatest health disparities and inequities. The 2017 Health Value Dashboard is the second edition of the rankings. HPIO released its first Dashboard in late 2014.
A New Approach to Reduce Infant Mortality and Achieve Equity
Senate Bill 332 required the Legislative Service Commission (LSC) to contract with a nonprofit organization to issue a report regarding the social determinants of infant mortality, and the LSC contracted with HPIO to do so. The final report was developed with guidance from over 100 Ohio stakeholders to look beyond medical care to explore factors in the social, economic and physical environment that affect infant mortality.
Connections between Education and Health No. 3: The Importance of Early Learning
The third in a series of briefs released earlier this year, this publication illustrates the importance of a child’s early years for both health and future educational attainment. It explores how early childhood experiences influence health, evidence-based early learning and family support programs and policies, the extent to which Ohio is implementing these initiatives and policy options to enhance early learning in Ohio.
Connections between Income and Health
Understanding how income influences health can inform policies, programs and resource allocation to improve both the health and economic well-being of Ohioans. This brief provides an overview of the relationship between income and health, describes the various factors that impact income, and health and outlines relevant policy implications.
