- Ohio performs relatively well on access to care (second quartile) but poorly on the other factors that influence overall health
- Tobacco use drives poor health
- Ohio’s healthcare spending needs to be re-aligned to provide greater support for healthy aging and prevention as a way to reduce spending on costly sick care later in life.
The Dashboard is unique in its emphasis on “health value,” a ranking that considers both population health and healthcare spending rather than health outcomes alone. The Dashboard also takes a more comprehensive approach to looking at health by evaluating social, economic and physical environments – all of which are significant contributors to overall health.
The Dashboard is the third edition of the rankings. HPIO released its first Dashboard in late 2014. Ohio ranked 46th in the 2017 Dashboard and 47th in health value in the inaugural edition.
While Ohio continues to rank in the bottom quartile on health value, there are many evidence-informed opportunities the state can pursue to improve our outcomes, both through policy change and public-private sector collaboration. Improvement is possible, and this year the Dashboard includes more evidence-informed strategies that policymakers can use to address the challenges Ohio faces.
