On August 31, new rules became effective for prescriptions written for the treatment of acute pain. The State Medical Board of Ohio (SMBO) has compiled a collection of the most frequently asked questions. Guidance based upon those inquiries is now available on the SMBO website.
At the recent meeting attended by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, an attorney who represents physicians before the SMBO, urged physicians to follow the newly enacted acute prescribing pain rules with great care as he speculated that the SMBO is going to be coming after even the most minor error in compliance “with a bazooka.”
