The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) would like to congratulate this year’s medical students on an outstanding Match Day. On March 21, 4,574 medical students matched to family medicine residency programs across the United States!
Match Day is a milestone for medical students as they prepare to graduate medical school and transition to the next step of their training in residency. The National Residency Match Program (NRMP), also known as The Match, aligns graduating and graduated medical students with residency training programs in many different specialties. This year’s match offered 148 more family medicine slots than in 2024, continuing to grow the workforce and meet the needs of patients across the country.
- Family medicine offered 5,379 slots, 148 more than in 2024, and 13.8% of positions offered in all specialties – an increase from 13.6% in 2024.
- 4,574 medical students and graduates matched to family medicine residency programs. Here’s the breakdown:
-

Become a Family Medicine Champion and Engage the Next Generation of Family Physicians
Connect with your passion, your community, and your purpose and help shape the future of family medicine with AAFP! Family Medicine Champions are guides along the pathway and process of medical education, providing information, tools, and support to recruit a diverse workforce and champion a positive vision for the future of family medicine. Champions are prepared to dispel myths, clear up misconceptions, and advocate for and share the depth and breadth of opportunities within the specialty.
As a foundation of the AAFP’s priority to strengthen pathways to family medicine, the program will prepare individuals to connect with students, and those who support them, to shed light on what it really means to be a family physician. Learn more about the Family Medicine Champions program and register for the upcoming cohort starting in August on the AAFP website.
