On February 8, 1969, the specialty of family medicine was born! On that day 50 years ago, the American Board of Medical Specialties approved an application submitted by the American Academy of General Practice (now the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)) and the American Medical Association Section on General Practice, and officially established the American Board of Family Practice (now the American Board of Family Medicine).
The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians joins the AAFP and other state chapters in this celebration and will continue to work together to ensure that the specialty is as strong 50 years from now as it is today. To learn more about the important initiatives and areas of focus for the AAFP, review “Fighting for Family Medicine for the Next 50 Years – Academy Takes Steps to Boost Resident Numbers, Revamp Health IT.”
We value all that you do for your families, your patients, and your communities. Take time to celebrate the amazing work you do by reflecting on what lead you to family medicine. Share your story with us; we’d love to hear from you! If you’d like to share your family medicine story, please email it to Director of Membership Emily Pavoni as a Word document along with at least 2 photos.
Thank you for all that you do!
Happy 50 years family medicine!
