As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, we must pay tribute to the family physicians who have paved the way before us. From meeting the needs of thousands of family physicians to advocating for affordable health care for all, the OAFP is still one of the most prominent and strongest chapters in the nation.
In the fall issue, we focus on family medicine milestones while celebrating 70 years of Academy history. With a welcome message, “We Stand on the Shoulders of Giants,” written by the OAFP’s 71st President Stan Anderson, MD, FAAFP, he describes what it means to be a family physician in the world we live in today.
Read how a recent graduate of The Ohio State University rediscovered her passion for family medicine half way across the world in “From Medical Student to Resident: A Transitional, Yet Historic Journey through Greece,” written by Anna Askari, MD; and how Hiten Patel found his leadership voice through the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute.
This year, we have a lot to celebrate! From surpassing the 5,000 membership milestone to accepting the 80% by 2018 National Achievement Award, the OAFP continues to serve its members through advocacy, communication, and education, which you can read more about in the 2017-18 Annual Report.
As we get ready for the Congress of Delegates in New Orleans, LA, learn more about Gary LeRoy, MD, FAAFP, who is running for the American Academy of Family Physicians president-elect, and see how he reacts to pressure as he takes on the tough questions.
On August 18, Jonathan Diller, MD, FAAFP, was honored with the Family Physician of the Year award at the Family Medicine Celebration in Columbus, OH, and Michael Raddock, MD, was honored with the Family Medicine Educator of the Year award. Additional honorees included Assim AlAbdulKader, MD, who received the Resident Leadership award, Cheryl Grossman, who received the Friend of Family Medicine award, and Ryan Kauffman, who received the Torchlight Leadership award. A special congratulations to all the award winners.
As we head into a new season of allergies, kids going back to school, and longer commutes into work, remember to enjoy these last moments of summer. As family physicians, our work is never done – but in the words of Confucius, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
