This past weekend, we celebrated 70 years of Academy history at the Family Medicine Celebration, held in Columbus, OH, at the Grand Event Center. To keep the celebration moving forward, we’ve officially launched the “Our History” webpage!
The history page highlights a historical timeline dating back from 1948 when the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians had only 514 members to today, with a record breaking total of more than 5,000 members. To help commemorate the 70th anniversary of the OAFP, we are celebrating the past, present, and future of family medicine.
Originally founded as the Ohio Academy of General Practice, the Academy was created to maintain the highest-quality standards for family physicians who were providing comprehensive health care to the public. Ohio was among the first, and still is today, considered one of the largest and strongest chapters in the nation.
The OAFP historical timeline encompasses Ohio chapter information ranging from the first woman president, Mary Jo Welker, MD, to the first website launched in 1996. Experience each decade by clicking through the various topics that impacted family medicine in Ohio.
The OAFP has always been a leader in family medicine. Whether you’re a member who’s been heavily involved in the past or a new member looking to start fresh, we want you to be a part of our history moving forward. By working together, our family physician, family medicine resident, and medical student members can have an even greater impact in providing quality health care to communities and families across Ohio.
