Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) member Amanda Williams, DO, CMD, is the president and co-owner of South Zanesville Family Medical Center and works part-time as a team physician at Interim Health Hospice, as director of Quality Care Partners, and as medical director for the Physicians Group of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the Helen Purcell Assisted Living Facility.
Dr. Williams is also the co-founder of John Glen (JG) Flag Football and Cheer Inc., a non-profit and proud affiliate of NFL FLAG, dedicated to creating exciting sports opportunities for 250 children, grades K-6, in the East Muskingum School District. With a focus on inclusivity, JG Flag Football and Cheer, Inc. welcomes kids of all skill levels and strives to make its programs affordable, ensuring every young athlete can enjoy the journey.
“As a family physician and proud OAFP member, this initiative is deeply personal,” explained Dr. Williams. “It represents the heart of family medicine — showing up for our communities, teaching young people about compassion and leadership, and creating opportunities for meaningful impact outside the clinic.”
On Saturday, September 27, JG Flag Football and Cheer, Inc., will host its first “Going Gold” Game in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This event will raise awareness and 100% of proceeds will benefit pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Those interested can also participate in the “Going Gold Raffle” for a chance to win signed memorabilia from The Ohio State University, as well as items from the NFL Browns, and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
You can learn more about Dr. Williams’ commitment to community engagement and her founding of JG Flag Football and Cheer, Inc. in her article, “Beyond the Exam Room: How Family Physicians Can Lead Change in their Communities,” which appears in the fall issue of The Ohio Family Physician.
“For medical students, residents, and family physicians alike, my message is simple: Your title gives you influence—but your actions outside the exam room are often where your greatest impact begins.”
