Valerie Good, MD, alternate resident director on the OAFP Board of Directors, has been appointed to serve as the resident member on the American Academy of Family Physicians Tobacco Prevention and Control Committee (TPCC).
Dr. Good’s term of office officially begins Sunday, January 1, 2017 and lasts through Sunday, December 31, 2017. This appointment was recommended by the AAFP Commission on Education and confirmed by the AAFP Board of Directors.
Dr. Good earned her medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She is currently an intern at the Grant Family Medicine Residency in Columbus, OH. As a fourth year medical student, Dr. Good attended the 2016 Family Medicine Congressional Conference where she joined the Ohio delegation on Capitol Hill visits advocating for patients at the national level. She was also selected to participate in the inaugural AAFP Foundation Emerging Leaders Institute where she completed a research project on undergraduate intimate partner violence. She is also an active member of the American Medical Women’s Association Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
“Illustrative of her passionate advocacy for patients in her exam room and beyond, Dr. Good, 11 days into her residency, challenged her fellow interns to advocate for funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health. Her email to them stated, “As you know, quitting smoking is the BEST thing our patients can do for their health, so let’s help people do that! Please, please, please take 10 minutes to call your senators and representatives. I know it’s not something we typically do, but I think it needs to be a part of our training as family doctors. Legislative advocacy allows us to make a difference for the health of ALL Americans, not just the ones we see in our exam room…so cool and so important!” In addition, Dr. Good has created a tobacco cessation visit EMR template for her residency to use that is based on AAFP guidelines.”
Congratulations, Dr. Good!
